Virgin Holiday’s have launched an application developed to help users decide and plan their holiday journey, by placing them in the specific location using augmented reality.
The application is available for iPhones free of charge, and it is the first to be used by a holiday company.
When the user opens the app, he/she is greeted by a screen showing a collection of Virgin’s retail interiors, then can directly enter the AR function (which is introduced by a short clip for the newbies), find the latest offers or browse store locations.
Using the phone’s camera, the AR feature is activated when the smartphone is pointed at the brochure cover, for example, the brochure might appear to “open” and a video of the location fills the screen.
Placing the user “in” the destination using sounds and movements and bringing to life the location, improves the traditional 2D brochure.
The company hopes that this technology will change the travel experience fundamentally and will build an effectively integrated package.
