The Toulouse-Blagnac Airport in France is planning to test a new service that will allow passengers to access their departure gates, check-in and pass through controlled areas by using an NFC-enabled smartphone.
The Airport is in partnership with Orange, BlackBerry and SITA. The trial is planned to launch this summer with 50 selected passengers using an NFC enabled SIM cards on their BlackBerry smartphones.
The smartphone will effectively become the passengers’ pass, giving them access to boarding areas, parking lots and a passenger lounge. The service will also provide instant information such as boarding gate or changes to their flight times.
The use of NFC technology during the passenger’s traveling provides many benefits over existing technology – it will work even if the device is powered off, it is very secure and does not require an application or an email.
And most importantly, the passengers that use NFC-enabled devices will be processed faster.
