The New York City Metropolitan is testing a QR Code based ticketing system, that will allow conductors to scan the code on the smartphone screen.

The trial is being tested by Metro Transit Authority employees on the North rail network, which relies on ancient paper tickets.

While the project is still closed to the public, the employees will use their Android, iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones to buy a rail tickets, which then can be verified directly from their smartphone.

There is no information whether the city’s Subway network will adopt the system, as the commuters are using the system of magnetic cards since 1993, and the they need to be repeatedly swiped in the old readers.
